Girl wearing new uniform off to school

I am 6 years old and I live in a large village called Pelkachour, tucked into the hills below the big snowy mountains. I live with my mum, dad, older sister Mina, and my grandmother on a small farm. I share a room with Mina and granny whilst mum and dad have their own room.

What's New

Mina and I are very excited because since May, we have started regularly going to the village school, thanks to The CAIRN Trust. Before this, dad worked really hard just so we could have enough food to survive. My family could not afford to buy all the things we needed to go to school.

The CAIRN Trust has begun to pay for 100 children in our village to go to school. They pay the school fees and give us our school uniform, books, bags, pencils and lots of other things for school. I am very proud of my school uniform and shoes, which I keep shinier than anyone! Now I go to school every day and I love it! My teacher is so nice, and I am learning to read and write. There are 29 children in my class, and my best friend Bhindu sits right beside me.

My Daily Life

Dahl

I wake up very early to help my mother collect water from the well and wood for the fire before going to school. We then make the family breakfast of dahl, which is a soup of lentils and spices with roti. If you would like to try to make some dahl or roti, please click here for the recipe.

Mandala

Autumn is my favourite time of year because there are so many festivals and holidays. My favourite is Tihar, the festival of lights which is similar to Christmas in England. Click here if you would like to learn more. I love decorating our house with beautifully coloured mandala’s. Click here if you would like to colour in a mandala. If you would like to help me decorate my house, please post them in the Kids Hut box in your school and I will display them on my page next time.
